2. Customizing Undertones, Shades & Proportions
Welcome to Part 2 of my breakdown on Walking around Chicago in red Mary Jane’s.
Before you lock in your final formula or outfit pairing, here is how I adapt the tones and textures for each client.

Finding Your Most Flattering Version
For warm undertones, lean into tomato-red or brick shades with a hint of orange—they’ll make your skin glow.
For cooler undertones, opt for a blue-based cherry or raspberry red to create a striking contrast.
If you’re fair, go for a brighter, almost candy-apple red; deeper skin tones can rock a rich, oxblood-tinged cherry beautifully.
Texture-wise, patent leather gives that glossy, dressy vibe.
But matte suede in a deep red feels more autumnal and casual.
Proportions matter too: chunky Mary Janes pair best with wide-leg trousers or midi skirts.
While delicate straps shine with dresses or skinny jeans.
✦ Which Finish Fits Your Vibe?
- Velvet Rose-Gold Glow: Effortless, soft-focus dimension that flatters every skin tone in daytime or candlelight.
- High-Impact Statement Finish: Crisp lines, rich pigment payoff, and bold contrast for evening events or street-style photos.
- Balanced Proportions: Keep one feature bold while letting the surrounding textures stay airy and breathable.
